Many sites are reporting that the new AVG free update has created a huge problem with Windows 7 64-bit users. This update is a very good testament to why you must keep a good backup system in place when dealing with software updates, even those that are critical, like virus protection.
This update completely cripples the OS mentioned and brings a recovery screen up that requires you use a recovery disk or boot up in safe mode to remove the files. Automatic updates are incredibly important when it comes to protecting your system so this is a problem that AVG has jumped on and the offending update has now been removed, but they will need to build that trust up again with their users that were affected by this critical error.
The Switched blog reported the following,
The 271.1.1/3292 (432/3292) definition update, which requires users to reboot their PC after installation, blocks Windows from booting properly and throws up a c0000135 blue screen of death, requiring that you take recovery action.
Do you have the proper backup solution in place that would help you recover from an ordeal such as this or do you rely strictly on your anti-virus provider to keep updates clean and safe for your system? I think this is a hard lesson to learn for everyone from casual computer users to strong business users alike.
