This is the second in the series of articles about computer Networks that center on the business case for technology rather than technology itself. In these articles, we describe the technology in terms of use, function, and purpose; instead of feature, design, and hierarchy.

Our first article, What is a Network, focused on the “what” of each component in your Network. For that article, we concluded with a definition for a Network: the business tool that enables your employees to be productive.

In this article, we move past the components and focus on your Network as that functional, business tool. Here we illustrate that a Network is both a capacity to compute and the capability to perform specific business functions. The first is a matter of size and the second is a matter of purpose. Ultimately, your Network needs to support what you need to do.
